One of the top selling midsized SUVs is the Ford Explorer. It has been available since 1990. Many consumers like the fact it is manufactured in the USA. The concept of this particular vehicle helped to bring the demand for midsized SUV vehicles into the spotlight. There are both two door and four door models offered.
The early version of the Ford Explorer was manufactured until 1994. While it was great to drive, and had lots of cargo room, it was a boxy style of design. It was very basic and consumers were starting to take an interest in some of the better looking midsized SUVs that competitors had in place.
This encouraged Ford to revamp the Explorer and the second generation ran through 2001. It featured the same V6 engine but consumers could upgrade to a V8 for additional power. This was recommended for towing usage. The V8 models also featured all wheel drive.
The second generation and forward with the Ford Explorer are no longer offered with the two doors. They are all considered five doors with the lift gate counted. In 2002 the design was upgraded for both the body and the interior to compete with the Mercury Mountaineer. Additional safety features were also added.
There are some special edition Ford Explorer options added between 2006 and 2010. They include the Ford Explorer Sport Trac and the Sport Trac Adrenalin. This is one of the top selling midsized SUV products in history, and the Ford Explorer doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
